Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee Volunteer Request

    

At APTA Virginia, we cherish the support we receive from our volunteers. Our mission-driven programs would not be possible without them! The reasons our volunteers give so selflessly of their time are as varied and diverse as the populations we serve. 

In an effort to improve access to high-quality care for the medically underserved and achieve greater diversity in our profession, APTA Virginia has created five teams for which we are actively recruiting volunteers. A list of the team descriptions can be found below.

 

Team 1: Content Production Volunteer

  • Meet bimonthly with Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee;
  • Create, manage, and/or lead content creation with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion with a team of volunteers;
  • Coordinate with the APTA Communications Committee on distributing content via established and existing channels;
  • Network and partner with like-minded organizations; and
  • Survey the needs of members and the content they would like to connect with.

Team 2: Community Outreach Volunteer

  • Meet bimonthly with Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee;
  • Participate in outreach by engaging with underserved communities to provide education on the benefits of physical therapy, our profession, and utilizing physical therapy services;
  • Develop a process/network with providers that will connect underserved individuals with necessary community resources (i.e. pro bono, income based etc.) related to rehabilitation;
  • Fundraise in support of providing resources for program participants; and
  • Create presentations and gather useful resources to provide to community partners/clients.

Team 3: Business Training Volunteer

  • Meets bimonthly with Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee;
  • Serve as a liaison to provide business education, practice strategy, and content to our mentees and the APTA Virginia community, in order to facilitate creating a sustainable private practice within underserved areas;
  • Network and recruit other business professionals; and
  • Business/Practice management experience is preferred.

Team 4: Leadership Volunteer

  • Meet bimonthly with Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee; and
  • Provide educational content and concepts on leadership to mentees in the APTA DIS Mentoring Program (also to include committee members and volunteers in order to facilitate effective leadership.)

Team 5: Cultural Humility Volunteer

  • Meet bimonthly with Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee;
  • Optimize inclusivity and participant experience by recruiting volunteers of diverse backgrounds;
  • Create and distribute cultural humility educational content for APTA Virginia, its districts, committees, partners, and membership in coordination with committee volunteers; and
  • Promote participation and increase awareness in APTA Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee.


We have as many opportunities to volunteer as there are people willing to give of their time.

About the Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee

Created in 2018, the Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee aims to address disparities in access to physical therapy, enhance the provision of culturally competent care, and serve as a resource for current students who are entering the profession. We are committed to facilitating economic mobility and empowerment for providers seeking to diversify the profession.
