Imaging Legislative Efforts Advance Toward 2027 Session

APTA Virginia continues to advance its imaging legislative initiative as part of its 2026/2027 advocacy agenda. In February, APTA Virginia President Dr. Emily Hawkins and State Legislative Chair Dr. Tom Bohanan submitted a letter to the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy outlining the profession's scope of practice and requesting further consideration of imaging-related regulatory questions. The matter was referred to the Board's Regulatory Work Group, which met in April to discuss the matter and evaluate potential next steps.  Those next steps will include an in-depth study of the topic by the Work Group, culminating in a draft guidance document on imaging that will be shared with the Board of Physical Therapy in August.

At the same time, APTA Virginia is actively pursuing a legislative pathway for the 2027 General Assembly session. Current efforts include meetings with key stakeholders and healthcare partners, including MSV, OSV, and radiology representatives, to build understanding and identify areas of alignment. Later this fall, the association plans to begin drafting legislative language and identifying potential bill sponsors. PAC fundraising efforts throughout spring and summer 2026 will help support advocacy activities tied to the 2027 initiative.

Evolving our practice requires navigating existing regulations alongside sustained advocacy, relationship-building, and financial support to shape future legislation. Members who want to help strengthen the profession's voice in Richmond are encouraged to contribute to the APTA Virginia PAC. PAC support helps ensure physical therapy remains represented in critical policy conversations and provides the resources needed to support long-term legislative priorities that impact the profession and patient access to care.
