Poverty Awareness
January is Poverty Awareness Month. According to the Virginia Department of Health, 10.6% of Virginia lives in poverty and 39.8% live below the ALICE threshold. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed; ALICE households are households with income above the Federal Poverty Level but below the basic cost of living. Physical therapy professionals treat more than just injury, pain, impairment, and functional limitation, we treat the whole person. Low socioeconomic status has wide-reaching effects that can impact the course of our care for our patients - access to nutrition, safe & clean housing, assistive devices and equipment, and more.
